Muscle Building for Men in Carmel and Indianapolis

You’ve been lifting for years and you look about the same. Or you lifted in your twenties, life happened, and now you’re 40 with a gut, a sore shoulder and no idea how to start again without hurting yourself. Either way, the fix is the same: a program built for your body, run with real progression, and someone making sure you actually do it.

I’m Grant Denney, an NCSF-certified personal trainer and strength and conditioning coach in Carmel, Indiana. I’ve been lifting for 15+ years, I train Muay Thai, and I’ve rebuilt my own body after more joint surgeries than I’d like to count. I help men in Carmel and Indianapolis build muscle, get strong and lose the gut without living in the gym or wrecking their joints.

Why most men’s programs don’t work

  • No progression. Same weights, same reps, same exercises for a year. Muscle grows when you ask more of it over time. If you’re not tracking and adding, you’re maintaining.
  • Too much junk volume. Two hours of random exercises beats you up without building anything. Muscle responds to a handful of hard, well-executed sets per muscle group per week, not to exhaustion.
  • Training through pain. The shoulder that pinches on bench, the elbow that burns on curls, the back that locks up on deadlifts. Men push through until something gives. Then they stop for six months.
  • Eating like a bodybuilder or like a bird. Either not enough protein to build anything, or “bulking” into 20 pounds of fat you’ll spend the next year trying to lose.
  • Nobody’s watching. Form drifts, effort drifts, and skipped sessions stack up. Accountability is half of why coaching works.

How I build muscle with men

  1. Assessment first. Your training history, injuries, schedule and what your body can handle right now. If you’ve got a shoulder or a knee with a story, we work around it from day one.
  2. Big movements, done right. Squat, hinge, press, pull and carry are the base. The variation is chosen for your body, not pulled from a magazine. Form gets coached every rep until it’s automatic.
  3. Progressive overload you can see. Every lift is logged in the Ultimate You Fitness app. Weights go up on a schedule, reps are prescribed, and I see what you did before our next session. Hypertrophy isn’t magic; it’s progression plus consistency.
  4. Enough volume, not maximum volume. Three or four well-structured sessions a week, in and out in about an hour. Hard sets in the right rep ranges, real rest between them, nothing wasted.
  5. Joints that keep up. Stability and mobility work is built into every session so getting bigger doesn’t mean getting hurt. Strong shoulders, hips and elbows are what let you train for decades.
  6. Protein and a plan. A daily protein target, calories set for building muscle without piling on fat, and food you actually eat. Try the free calculators for a starting point.

Over 40? It still works. You just can’t be careless.

Testosterone drifts down, recovery takes longer, and old injuries have opinions. None of that stops you from building muscle; it just means the program has to be smarter. Fewer wasted sets, better exercise selection, more attention to sleep and recovery, and a little patience. Men in their 40s, 50s and 60s build real muscle with me every week. One of my clients went through Boot Camp and had been training for decades before we started. He’s 62 and seeing results he didn’t think he had left.

Having been through Boot Camp and managed to live for 62 years before I met the man I thought I knew how to work out. Grant transformed my routine I see amazing results!

I was very skeptical of personal trainers because I thought they would want to change many aspects of my diet or routines in order to see progress. But my experience has been different. He adapts the training to your lifestyle and always tries to get the most out of each training session.

Who this is for

Men in Carmel, Fishers, Westfield, Zionsville and Indianapolis who want to look like they lift. Guys who’ve plateaued and want a real program. Former athletes who want to feel athletic again. Men over 40 who want to lose the gut and keep their strength. Anyone training around a shoulder, elbow, knee or back that’s been holding them up; that’s my specialty. If your main goal is dropping weight first, start with weight loss coaching; the muscle building comes with it.

Questions men ask

How many days a week do I need to train?

Three is the sweet spot for most men; four if you recover well and have the time. Two can still work if the sessions are structured right. More than that usually isn’t better.

Do I need to bulk?

No. A small calorie surplus with plenty of protein builds muscle without the fat gain of an old-school bulk. If you’re carrying extra weight already, you can build muscle and lose fat at the same time, especially in the first year of real training.

Can I do this on my own with your program?

Yes. Plenty of men train with me in person a couple of times a month and run the rest of the program themselves through the app, or go fully online. I see every session you log either way.
