Reaching out to a personal trainer for the first time is the hardest rep of the whole journey. Most people put it off for months — not because they don’t want the results, but because they don’t know what they’re walking into. So here’s exactly what a first session with me looks like at FlexWerk Fitness in Carmel, Indiana. No mystery, no surprises.
Before you arrive: we talk first
It starts with a conversation, not a workout. Call or text me at 765-571-1514 or send a message, and we’ll talk about your goals, your history, and anything that’s been holding you back — old injuries, a schedule that fights you, a gym experience that left a bad taste. This costs nothing, and it’s how we both figure out whether we’re a good fit.
The first session: assessment, not punishment
Forget the movie version where a trainer destroys you on day one to prove a point. A first session that leaves you too sore to come back is a failure, not a badge of honor. Instead, we’ll cover:
- How you move. A handful of basic movements — squat, hinge, push, pull — so I can see your starting point, your mobility, and anything we need to work around.
- What you can do today. We establish honest baselines, not maximums. There is zero pressure to impress anyone.
- Your first real workout. Scaled to exactly where you are. You’ll work, you’ll probably sweat, and you’ll leave feeling capable — not broken.
- The plan. Before you leave, you’ll know what your program looks like, how often we’ll train, and what happens between sessions.
Where we train
I train clients at FlexWerk Fitness at Carmel City Center (885 Monon Grn Blvd, Suite 120) — a private studio, not a crowded big-box gym. No lines for equipment, no audience, nobody judging your starting point. For a lot of my clients, especially people who felt intimidated by commercial gyms, the private setting is what finally made training stick. I also offer online programs if you’re outside the Carmel and Indianapolis area or travel a lot.
Who I train
My current clients range from people in their twenties chasing their first pull-up to an 85-year-old working on strength and balance. Some want to build muscle, some want to lose fat, some just want to move without pain again. The program is different for every one of them — that’s the entire point of personal training. You can read what they say about working with me on the About page.
