When people picture personal training, they usually picture someone in their twenties or thirties chasing a beach body. I want to tell you about my favorite counterexample: one of my longest-running clients started training with me at 83. She’s 85 now, and she hasn’t fallen once in over two years.
Why falls are the real opponent
For adults over 65, falls are the leading cause of injury — and the fear of falling quietly shrinks people’s lives. They stop taking stairs, stop traveling, stop getting on the floor with their grandkids. The medical term is “fear of falling avoidance behavior,” but what it really means is giving up pieces of your life one at a time.
Strength training directly addresses two important, modifiable fall-risk factors: lower-body weakness and poor balance — and hip strength in particular is closely linked to staying on your feet. It’s not about lifting heavy for the sake of it. It’s deliberate, progressive work on the muscles that catch you when you stumble — and the confidence that comes from knowing they will.
What training looks like at 85
My client’s program looks different from a 30-year-old’s, but the principles are identical: we strengthen her lower body for mobility, work different muscle groups for flexibility, and progress a little at a time. Deadlifts scaled to her level. Sled work. Balance drills. She works hard — I push, but I’m patient when something takes time to learn, because at any age, that’s how learning works.
The results, in her own words from her review: her posture is straightening, she’s growing stronger, and she now travels with her family and enjoys herself. She told me she’ll keep training “so that my time will be more enjoyable.” That sentence is the entire reason I do this job.
It’s not too late — it’s the best time to start
Muscle responds to training at every age. Studies on lifters in their 70s, 80s, and 90s show meaningful strength gains within months. What matters is starting where you are, with someone who knows how to scale the work safely around whatever your body has been through and progress it patiently.
If you’re in the Carmel or Indianapolis area and you (or a parent) have been thinking “it’s probably too late for me” — it isn’t. I train clients from their teens to their mid-80s at FlexWerk Fitness in Carmel City Center, and the door is open. Reach out here or call/text 765-571-1514 and let’s talk about what’s possible.
